Clem Ainslie of the Harvey School – Inlaid angular vase 1925

Inlaid Angular Vase

Slab-built, on four ball feet.

Decorated in the inlaid technique, with dark geometric motifs inset into a pale clay, the whole then glazed in an opaque green glaze.

Signed & dated 1925

Size: 15cm high

Item #7

This piece bears some resemblance to exercise 14 in technique & design, although is quite different in form, being an upright handleless shape rather than the squat form demanded by the exercise (see p26).

This technique, of inlaying clay into reserves, then smoothing them off, was regarded as the most difficult of all the exercises, as failure in the kiln was common.
